Roberto Saviano, pictured last year. Photo: Tiziana Fabi/AFP"Gommorah" writer Roberto Saviano on Monday marked 10 years living under police protection by telling the mafia bosses who want him dead: "I'm still alive, you did not succeed." The award-winning Italian joualist has lived under guard since just after the 2006 publication of his book "Gommorah", which depicted in unprecedented detail the grip of the Camorra organised crime syndicate on his home city of Naples. The hugely successful book led to an acclaimed film and television series but it also eaed its author a string of death threats from enraged heads of powerful Camorra clans. In October 2006, Saviano got a phone call telling him he was being placed under protection. "When they came to pick me up, I asked 'For how long?" he recalled in an article for Italian daily La Repubblica. "And an officer replied, 'for a few days I think.'" A decade later, Saviano still lives his life as a potential target. "It is hard to su The Local...

Banco Popolare di Milano. Giuseppe Cacace/AFPBanco Popolare and BPM shareholders voted on Saturday to merge the two banks under an accord that will create Italy's third-largest lender and consolidate the country's troubled banking sector. As expected, the "yes" vote won easily at Banco Popolare, with some 23,683 votes in favour of the tie-up to 118 against. Over at the Banca Popolare di Milano (BPM), the ballot had been expected to be tighter after two associations of shareholder retirees called on those voting to reject a deal they said would create a giant institution with little clout. But there too the "yes" vote won comfortably, with 7,315 shareholders supporting the merger while 2,731 voted against and 142 abstained. The new entity "Banco BPM" will be third only to Italian banking giants Intesa Sanpaolo and UniCredit. The merger will "strengthen the banking sector," Milan Polytechnic expert Marco Giorgino told AFP. It brings much-needed breathing room to Italy's troubled lende The Local...

Matteo Renzi at a meeting on renewables in June. Photo: Filippo Monteforte/AFPItaly's Matteo Renzi on Saturday unveiled his 2017 budget, which he hopes will please the European Commission and win him support at home in a key referendum. The cabinet signed off on the budget, which will then be scrutinised by Brussels. It remains to be seen whether the Commission will be satisfied with Italy lowering its deficit to 2.3 percent of gross domestic product from the earlier 2.4 percent target. "It's a budget full of good news for Italy and the Italians," Renzi, who took power about two and a half years ago, told a press conference after the cabinet meeting. "Italy is still not going well, but after two and a half years it's going a bit better. We are still not happy though, we are hungry for positive results," he said. Renzi was forced in September to slash Italy's growth forecasts for this year and next after a gloomy summer in which it became clear that an economy that had been slowly gr The Local...

Jacopo Fo, son of dramatist Dario Fo, during the march. Photo: Giuseppe Cacace/AFPThousands of mouers sang as they walked through the streets of Milan Saturday to pay their respects to Italy's Nobel prize-winning dramatist Dario Fo at a lay ceremony in front of the city's Gothic cathedral. The funeral cortege wound its way in heavy rain from the Piccolo Teatro Strehler where Fo's coffin had been lying in state, with mouers singing political ballads in honour of the left-winger, who died on Thursday aged 80. Crowds taking shelter under a sea of coloured umbrellas in the northe Italian city's Piazza Duomo chanted "Dario! Dario!" Fo's son Jacopo and some of the country's cultural elite spoke in honour of a provocative playwright unafraid to clash with authority. "We are celebrating the greatest among us, who had the ability to ridicule the powerful by pulling faces," Fo's close friend Carlo Petrini, founder of the Slow Food Movement, told the crowds. Castel Gondolfo has sumptuous gardens and palaces. Photo: Vatican StateWho needs a summer palace? Not Pope Francis, who has renounced the delights of Castel Gandolfo outside Rome and opened his private apartments to tourists, the Vatican said Friday. The Argentine has refused the traditional trappings of the papacy from the start, declining to move into the sumptuous papal apartment in the Vatican and plumping instead to live in a hotel inside the tiny city state. His rooms at Castel Gandolfo, a former summer favourite with popes hoping to escape the heat of the capital, have been tued into a museum which will be officially inaugurated on October 21. Francis has visited the palace some 25 kilometres (15 miles) from Rome only a couple of times since his election in 2013, and has never spent the night there. His predecessors John Paul II (1978-2005) and Benedict (2005-2013) often stayed at the site, which has been owned by the Holy See since 1596 and has expanded over the centuries The Local...

The merged bank would be the largest lender in Northe Italy, one of Europe's richest regions: Photo: Giuselle Cacace/AFPBanco Popolare and BPM shareholders are set to vote Saturday on a proposed merger to create the country's third-largest lender, a much-anticipated accord expected to consolidate Italy's troubled banking sector. It is not yet a done deal: while the Banco Popolare votes are widely believed to be in the bag, there are fears shareholders at the Banca Popolare di Milano (BPM) may sink the merger, with two associations of former BPM employees set against it. The bank wrote to shareholders Monday to urge them to tu out and cast their ballots at the extraordinary meeting on forging "Banco BPM", which would be third only to giants Intesa Sanpaolo and UniCredit. Cardinals gather in St Peter's Square to celebrate Palm Sunday: Photo: Vincenzo Pinto/AFPThe new McVatican comes with a side order of outrage. Plans to open a McDonald's next to Saint Peter's Square in Rome have angered cardinals, including a group of the red-hatted "Princes of the Church" who live above the proposed site. "It's a controversial, perverse decision to say the least," Cardinal Elio Sgreccia said in an interview with La Repubblica daily on Saturday.  Opening a branch of the US fast-food chain in a piazza to the right of the Vatican's basilica is "by no means respectful of the architectural traditions of one of the most characteristic squares which look onto the colonnade of Saint Peters," he said. Sgreccia does not live in the building but was speaking on behalf of the seven cardinals who do reside above the site, which covers 538 square metres (5,800 square foot), and is being rented out by ASPA, the authority in charge of the Vatican's real estate. Not just pennies: Italy's non-observed economy was worth €211 billion in 2014. File photo: PexelsThe 'non-observed' economy - comprising both underground and illegal activities - was worth €211 billion in 2014, accounting for 13 percent of the country's entire GDP. This data comes from Istat, which revealed on Friday that the value of the non-observed economy had increased by €5 billion since the previous year, when it contribited 12.9 percent of the total GDP. The bulk of the money comes from the underground economy, which contributed €194 billion (12 percent of the GDP) last year, while illegal activity brought in around €17 billion.  Between 2011 and 2014, the value of the unobserved economy has steadily risen to 13 from 12.4 percent of the total GDP.  Story continues below… The biggest chunk (46.9 percent) is down to companies under-declaring their income, while a further 36.5 percent comes from illegal labour. Crowds queue outside the original Naples branch. Photo: yashima/FlickrThe 'Da Michele' pizzeria in Naples is known as the best in the world, catering to hundreds of hungry Italians each night, and was featured in the film Eat, Pray, Love. Now, Londoners too can have a taste of Italy. The Naples pizzeria, which opened in 1870, seats 80 people at its simple tables. Only two flavours are served - margherita and marinara - and hungry visitors often queue patiently outside for hours before getting a seat. The inside is unassuming, but a photo of Roberts during filming is displayed near the entrance, amongst other memorabilia including poems, family photos and information about the Condurro family, which has run the eatery since its humble beginnings. Now the family has given its blessing for a London branch of the Antica Pizzeria Da Michele, which will be managed by the fifth generation. Red wine flowing from a fountain, offering a refreshment at the end of a long walk... it sounds too good to be true, but on Sunday, a wine fountain was inaugurated in central Italy. Locally-produced wine will flow from the fountain in Abruzzo, the first of its kind, and it's accessible 24/7. The best part? It's completely free to help yourself to a glass. The fontana del vino is located in Caldari di Ortona, in Abruzzo, along a popular pilgrimage route, the Cammino di San Tommaso. Photo: Dora Sarchese Vineyard "The wine fountain is a welcome, the wine fountain is poetry," the Dora Sarchese vineyard wrote on its Facebook page. The mayor of Calizzano has asked refugees to avoid using the same bus as local children. File photo: El Gran Dee/FlickrA mayor in northe Italy faced backlash after asking refugees to avoid using the same buses as local schoolchildren, with the regional representative of PM Renzi's democratic party likening the segregation to "apartheid". But he's sticking to his decision. The mayor of Calizzano, a town near Savona in northe Italy, held a meeting with the local bus company and the owners of the hotel where 40 refugees are currently staying, to request that the migrants use a different bus from schoolchildren. The mayor, Pierangelo Oliviero noted that since the bus only had space for 48 people, and children had to take either the 6.30 or 6.45 bus in order to reach school on time, the migrants staying at the Hotel Lux should use a different mode of transport. Migrants stand outside a centre for asylum seekers in Italy. More than 5 million foreigners live in Italy, as of January 1st 2016, making up 8.3 percent of the total population. Between them, they fund the pensions of 640,000 Italians, according to a new report. This is particularly impressive since only 100,000 foreigners draw pensions themselves in Italy. The report 'The economic impact of immigration' by the Leone Moressa Foundation, was presented to the Interior Ministry on Tuesday. Published annually, it measures the tax and social security contributions of migrants living in Italy, as well as their cost to the state.
